Excited About: Family Trunk Project

This is probably the most inspiring family history project I’ve ever come across. Emily Johnson’s Family Trunk Project takes the traditional family tree in an entirely new direction through knitting. As she explains it, “I’m designing one garment inspired by each member of my family tree, reaching back to my great-grandparents’ generation and beyond. These clothes may or may not be based on garments my ancestors actually wore, but each one draws on its namesake in some way, whether it be through ethnic origin, trade, personality or a combination of all three.” Though inspired by the past, the designs are all meant to be wearable in the modern era.
So far three patterns have been released, including Marjorie in the Spring 2008 issue of Knitty, which was inspired by photographs of Emily’s grandmother in the 1950’s. The gorgeous Jessie Lambdin Shawl pictured below is also currently available, as is Kenneth McNeil, a men’s cardigan. Be on the lookout for future designs as Emily completes her project. I know I’m excited to watch her progress.
