Sweater of the Week: Ingenue

Posted by meg On October - 6 - 2008

For Sweater of the Week, I usually try to choose a pattern that is available online so that everyone reading this has access to it immediately. This week however, I’ve chosen the sweater that is foremost in my mind (and just a few inches from my elbow as I type) – Ingenue, from Wendy Bernard’s new book Custom Knits.

ingenue

Ingenue is a worsted weight, top-down raglan style sweater with details that make it totally appealing and totally classic. The stitch pattern at the neckband, hem and cuffs and the sculptural collar take Ingenue beyond your basic raglan. The gauge of 18 st/4″ in stockinette means the knitting is quick – quick enough to complete in one week, I hope, making this not just my Sweater of the Week but sweater of ONE week. The yarn is Karabella Marble, an aran weight blend of wool and alpaca. Some knitters have chosen to substitute Berroco Ultra Alpaca, another wool and alpaca blend. I decided on Cascade 220 Heathers in a dark blackberry color and so far that is working out well. I think the key to this sweater’s shape is a yarn with just enough drape but not too much. For me the look is all about that collar, and I wanted to make sure it was wide enough and would stand up well. Besides choosing a yarn that wouldn’t flop over, I went up a needle size for the neckband to make sure the stitch pattern didn’t pull in, and will do the same for the hem and cuffs.

Ingenue is written for sizes XS to 3XL with finished measurements from 30.25 to 51.5 inches. You’ll need 855 – 1330 yards of your chosen yarn, depending on size. To me it looks like the model is wearing the sweater some positive ease, so if you like that look take that into account when choosing which size to knit.

Wondering why I am trying to knit this sweater in one week? On Saturday, October 11th, Wendy will be at Third Place Books in Seattle signing her book. I decided on Saturday morning, October 4th, that it would be fun to wear one of her designs when I go, and since I hadn’t knit one yet,  I should really get started. I went shopping that afternoon, finished the neckband that night (it’s twice as long as it looks from the outside), and almost got through the raglan increases yesterday. I think I’m still on track to finish. Care to join me?

That is absolutely gorgeous! I’ve been needing an excuse to buy this book and I think you just gave it to me. I can’t wait to see your finished sweater!

There’s several patterns in that book I like. I finished Favorite Cardigan for a friend, picture posted on Ravelry. Looking forward to seeing how this one works out for you!

I would be curious to hear what other yarns knitters have subsituted. This sweater is probably my favorite of the whole book.
