Eine Kleine Yarnmusik: Evil Urges

We all have evil urges to deal with:
Loopy Ewe sneak-ups.
Project start-itis.
That gorgeous hand-dyed roving.
It’s ok. Really. The first step toward dealing with your evil urges is to admit that you have them. The next step? Create a soundtrack for them!
“Evil Urges” from the album of the same name by My Morning Jacket
When listening to this album, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Jim James and company had a evil urge to go rifling through their record collections of 70s and 80s pop, take their favorite sonic details, toss them into a blender and just see what happened to come out. The result is a sort of musical Rorshach test – what you hear in this music is sort of a reflection of what you’ve listened to and loved in the past. Depending on the track, I hear shades of 70s power pop, a touch of the Grateful Dead or Crosby Stills and Nash, a little early-80’s solo Phil Collins, and, in the case of the track “Highly Suspicious”, a whole lot of Prince-meets-Thomas Dolby quirk. It’s not all a game of Catch the Pop Reference, though. The best album tracks are the ones that take these older styles as a point of departure and grow into something sublimely transcendent. Case in point – “Smokin’ from Shooting”:
So, you and My Morning Jacket have something in common. We just heard what they did with their evil urges – what will you do with yours?
The Music: Evil Urges, the latest album from My Morning Jacket
Suitable For: Resisting – or indulging, who am I to judge? – your evil fibery urges.
