Tutorial: Norwegian Purl

Posted by adminnie On March - 5 - 2009

Most people who knit don’t care for seed stitch or ribbing, for one reason or another.  English, or throwers,  have to use large movements to take the yarn from the front to the back.  Continental knitters, or pickers, while using smaller movements,  still have to move the yarn back and forth.  Heather has shown us how to do Norwegian Purling in this video, which leaves the yarn IN THE BACK.  I’m sitting down and figuring this out TODAY.

Great video. I’d never seen this technique before. I’m going to try it out too.

It works! After years of playing with both throwing and picking and always hating purling……….I don’t any more. I’m now going to forever be a picker, unless I’m doing two handed stranded!Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Patti

Wonderful video! I tried it out right away and it was so easy! I think I will always use this way of purling now whenever I have to do ribbing or the like.

Oooh! I’m going to have to try that! Maybe that will get me to try harder to do continental!

I can highly recommend the Norwegian Purl method! I took a “left-handed knitting” class at Stitches West last week, and it was AWESOME! The movement is kinda fiddley, especially starting out, but it is TEH AWSUM if you can figure it out. :D

Great video, thanks for posting it! I have heard the term Norwegian purling before but never seen it done. I had to try at once, and it’s easy. I have to teach my hands to do this properly, they are used to another way of Continental purling.

Whoa, that is just funky. I’m a picker myself and don’t have any trouble moving the yarn to the front for a purl (I hold the yarn over my left hand the same way for a knit or purl so it’s just one fast & simple motion) but I’m still going to try this out just for the funk-factor. :P Thanks!

Funnily enough I’m danish and every dane I now purl “norwegian” (this is just an ordinary purl for us;)) but the one norwegian in my knitting group purl the other continental way..

    Very nice and clear demonstration!
