O, Miss Violet, Where Art Thou (Going)?

Do songs like that make you tap your toes and sing along? Is O Brother Where Art Thou? one of your favorite movies?

Do you like to learn about other areas of the country?

Do you like new knitting patterns and yarn?

OK, I figured at least one of those would get you.

For a long time, Miss Violet has given us hints about a new noname project. Well, the project has a name: The Mountain Sole Project.

tmsp-coming

Miss Violet will be traveling Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail (perhaps better known as the Crooked Road) in southwest Virginia. The trail was created in 2003 to generate tourism and an appreciation of the culture native to the area, especially bluegrass music.

Our Miss Violet will be traveling the entire length of the Crooked Road, and she’s taking us with her. She will keep a travel journal/sketch diary reflecting her travels. She will conduct interviews with musicians, instrument-makers, and artisans. We’ll also be able to follow her through almost-daily blog posts and podcasts.

Now, here’s where the knitting part comes in. Based on her interviews and experiences, Miss Violet will create a series of patterns based on TMSP. And that’s not all. Dizzy Blonde Studios will be creating a series of Mountain Sole sock yarn! There will be semisolid and handpainted yarns from which to choose.

TMSP doesn’t end when Miss Violet reaches the end of the Crooked Road. She will publish a book of additional patterns and journal content.

Now, as a longtime fan of roots music, including bluegrass, I can’t wait for Miss Violet’s first post. This project has truly cranked my tractor!

I’m usually a metalhead, but yeah there is something about bluegrass that just touches the soul. I *love* the O Brother soundtrack. I only wish I didn’t live a little east of southwest VA heh.

Yeah!! I was hoping it would be part of Appalachia. Now to see what you create. And the tales will be great. Although it means no L&V while you are gone unless you stockpiled a few episodes.

OMG!!!! YAY!!! Through the area where my family’s from. Wave over yonder when you get to Floyd. My Grandma’s over the mountain from there. (And there’s some cool wineries, and I know of a great cidery…)

I can’t wait to see what you come up with, Miss V. Woo!

Have a glorious time! The highlight of my teen years was a trip to the Union Grove Fiddler’s Convention. I look forward to hearing your reports. O Brother Where Art Thou is my daughter’s favorite movie.
